After unplugging the unit, we unscrewed the top part where all the controls are. There is two of em, one on the left and the right. The unit with all the buttons will fold up, which gives you a look inside its belly.
Check and see if all looks well. Are all the wires connected? Does there seem to be any burn marks or indications of blowout? If not your ok.
The next thing to do is to lift the top part of the dryer up. You will then see the dryer container itself, you know the place you throw everything into. It should have a big rubber band around it. If it is broken your unit will not work. You could search here for that problem.

Oh, yeah......make sure you know the model number found inside the door.
If the both the top part and belt look good there is one more place to look, and that is the door switch. Open the door and right above the serial # holding the switch part in place are two screws. Unscrew them and gently
lift it out through the top part of the dryer.
What you can do now is to test the unit by plugging it in and holding down the white puffy button and holding the start button. BE CAREFUL! If it starts working
make sure the switch is actually hitting the button when the door is closed. When we pressed the white button in and hit the start button we smelled a little smoke. When we detached the switch part we found out that it had already burnt out. Remember the wiring scheme or put different colored tape on each wire to remember to put them in the proper place. (Refer to bottom of page for diagram) We spent an hour on line looking for a replacement part. Make sure you know your model number-and find the exact replacement part for your switch part. I have the same Kenmore dryer and the door seemed to keep popping open, preventing it from turning on. I followed these simple instructions, went to Grainger, picked up the door switch, installed it with my neighbor, and it worked!!!!!!!!
I am $300.00 "Richer".
